Arthritis, Joint Pain and Hemp Seed Oil

As we wander through life’s journey the pain and discomfort of arthritic joint pain often rears its head.

Arthritis is an umbrella term for over 100 arthritic maladies including rheumatoid arthritis and gout arthritis – the most common of which is osteoarthritis. And while arthritis isn’t specifically age-related – athletes, dancers and tradespeople are often troubled by inflamed joints – as we grow older it becomes more commonplace.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

If your joints are swollen and painful you could well be experiencing osteoarthritis which can affect the entire area including bone, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. Every joint in your body uses connective tissue known as cartilage for cushioning – in effect, it acts like a shock absorber allowing smooth, painless motion. Cartilage degenerates with age or – in the case of athletes or tradespeople – repetitive injury. Over time, it thins and can eventually break down so the ends of the bones are less protected and become inflamed. In some cases the wear and tear may get so severe they grind against each other. Osteoarthritis is a gradual process that typically occurs over many years and usually begins after major trauma or repeated injury.
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint and often occurs in the hands but mainly affects weight-bearing joints like the feet, ankles, knees and spine.

Who’s Most Susceptible to Osteoarthritis?

The Ministry of Health tells us that we’re more likely to get osteoarthritis as we grow older and it’s particularly common in the over 65 age group. Arthritis New Zealand says it affects 10 per cent of all adults in New Zealand and while it can affect people of any age it mostly appears after the age of 40. The organisation also tell us osteoarthritis is not an inevitable fact of life however women are more likely to develop it than men, and osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers tends to run in families.
According to The World Health Organisation musculoskeletal disorders represent a global threat to healthy ageing and are a leading cause of disability largely due to pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and grew by 75 per cent from 1990 to 2013. It hasn’t stopped there and it continues to be a growing concern. Thankfully Mother Nature and hemp seed oil are on hand!

How Might Hemp Seed Oil Help?

The main hallmarks of joint pain and/or arthritis is swelling and inflammation which can be both debilitating and demoralising.

Thank goodness for hemp seed oil.

Why?

Because research data suggests hemp seed oil is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent offered to us by Mother Nature. As such it contributes none of the potential side effects of prescription medications. Don’t get us wrong. Modern medicine is lifesaving, and we are thankful for it but if there’s a gift from nature that will help our wellbeing why not consider taking it?

Hemp seed oil doesn’t just pose a hopeful win for arthritis, inflammation is also believed to be at the root of the majority of modern-day chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Let Food Be Thy Medicine

Hippocrates – the Greek founder of Western medicine – is credited with saying ‘let food be thy medicine’ as far back as 400BC. However, with the advent of industrialisation, our diets have become more and more processed, refined and tampered with by man. This has gone hand in hand with an explosion of the aforementioned diseases. Nowadays the pendulum has swung back to include a focus on the health-promoting benefits of dietary factors as an adjunct to pharmacology for the prevention and management of disease.

“Clean” eating from the earth in the form of non-refined fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and good fats are now recognised as tantamount for optimum wellness and healthy ageing. Polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) such as the omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in hemp seed oil are key and in the right ratios could play a significant anti-inflammatory role in joint pain, arthritis and other chronic diseases.

The Essential Fatty Acids In Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is a rich source of the essential fatty acids our bodies can’t produce themselves. Because we can’t make them we need to source them from our diets and sometimes it can be difficult to get the balance right. Hemp seed oil packages omega 6 and omega 3 up neatly and delivers them in a perfect ratio of 3:1. To put that in perspective many diets are too heavy on omega 6 at 20:1. This is why we call hemp seed oil one of ‘nature’s most perfectly balanced plant oils’.

What is GLA & Why Does It Help Arthritis?

Our hemp seed oil also contains an impressive percentage – up to 5% – of pure gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This is rare to find in a seed oil, apart from borage and Evening primrose oil.

GLA’s (Gamma Linolenic Acid) anti-inflammatory properties have been anecdotally shown to reduce inflammation in the body. In days of old GLA became so well regarded for ‘de-swelling’ when used for folk remedies it was nicknamed “the King’s cure-all”. High praise indeed and probably well-deserved because GLA is not just purported to decrease inflammation it’s also been claimed to have positive benefits for skeletal health, brain function, metabolism and skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) and psoriasis.
