Someone asked us the other day... "Can you colour hemp hearts?" And so we tried... and yes you can... and here's how you do it! Just perfect in place of sugar sprinkles. Healthy, sugar-free hemp heart sprinkles for decorating cakes, biscuits, slices, balls, etc.
Directions
- Begin to gently toast 1/2 cup hemp hearts in a large frying pan over a low-medium heat. While it's heating, add a time a few teaspoons of very diluted *coloured water. (You don't want to overdue this... adding just a single drop or two of food colouring to a small amount of water is sufficient.) Continue to stir over the heat being careful not to burn the hearts until all the liquid has evaporated and you are left with dryish hearts. They may look glossy, but this is the natural oil in the hearts.
- *If you don't have your own natural colouring, you can actually make your own. E.g. For pink colouring beetroot juice works beautifully. Blend a little grated raw beetroot and strain off a little of the juice. Experiment with other fruit and veg for more colours!
